what the cuirassier flags might have looked like. It is strange that
all Hessian dragoons carried the swallow-tailed standard except for
this Dalwigk which suggests that at some date the 4 cuirassier

further information on this, suffice to say that the Dalwigk flag

rows and intrigue that centres on three generations of the family
that ruled Hesse-Kassel – William VIII, his son Frederick II and
his grandson William IX. The history books don't go into their
personal relationships but you can read between the lines

When
the hereditary prince of Hesse-Cassel, Frederick (later to be
Frederick II) , converted to Roman Catholicism in 1747, and,
incidentally, abandonned his family, his father, the reigning
landgrave William VIII decided to do what he could to limit his son's
future realm. He therefore made the county of Hanau-Münzenberg,
which had been part of Hesse-Cassel since 1736, a secundogeniture of
Hesse-Cassel, transferring it to his grandson William. A
secundogeniture (from Latin:secundus "following,
second," and genitus"born")
was a dependent territory given to a younger son of a princely house
and his descendants, creating a cadet branch. This was a special form
of inheritance in which the second and younger son received more
possessions and prestige than he would have normally under the rules
of primogeniture. It avoided the division of the estate and gave
younger branches a stake in the stability of the house.

As
count William was underage, his mother the landgravine, princess Mary
of Great Britain, ruled as his legal guardian. His childhood was
mostly spent in Denmark. After his accession to the throne of
Hesse-Cassel in 1760, landgrave Frederick II repeatedly tried to
re-unite Hesse-Hanau with Hesse-Cassel, but his efforts failed due to
the resistance of Great Britain and the Protestant estates. As
further protection, troops from Hanover were garrisoned in Hanau.
When William came of age in 1764 he took over the government of the
county. Two years later he signed an agreement with Great Britain to
supply troops when necessary. Both he and his father waived
the taxes of families of men who would serve in America.
Had father and son been reconciled by then?

At
the death of Frederick II in 1785, William became landgrave of
Hesse-Cassel. The government of Hesse-Hanau remained in general
separate from Hesse-Cassel. Cabinet and war office were, however,
merged with those in Hesse-Cassel, and the court of appeal of Cassel
got jurisdiction over Hanau in 1792. Until then Hesse-Hanau was ruled
as an independent state, undergoing extensive modernizations with the
erection of significant buildings in the capital of Hanau. Money for
this came from the subsidies the reigning count received from his
uncle, king George III of Great Britain. In return, Hesse-Hanau made
available a contingent of 2,400 soldiers for the use of the British
Crown in the American Revolutionary War.

flags from the plate which you can also see here. It is undated but I
believe the plate (and there are others in this range) dates from
anywhere from 1760 to the start of the AWI. Note that none of these
flags are those used in the AWI so my guess is that they were the
transitional flags before the AWI issue. I think that the names are
misleading too. This regiment is named as Erbprinz and Wutginau
became Erbprinz in 1776. The first Hessians arrived in America on
August 15, 1776 so hardly enough time to change the flags to the
newer and fancier AWI versions. I think the plates show the new flags
issued in 1760 when Landgrave Friedrich II came to the throne.

Here
is the second regiment for my Hessian SYW army, Prince Karl. The
Inhaber of this regiment remained the same person for the SYW through
the AWI. There is also a well known painting of the regiment which
shows an incident at the battle of Krefeld. Kronoskaf says “
On June 23, the regiment took part in the Battle of Krefeld where it
was deployed on the right wing under the command of the Hereditary
Prince. Towards the end of the battle, the Hereditary Prince and
Gilsa rallied the battalion along with Wutginau Infantry and other
Allied infantry units and advanced onto the plain. The Comte de
Gisors at the head of 4 squadrons of the Corps des Carabiniers de
Monsieur le Comte de Provence charged these advancing battalions who
let them close in to about 20 paces before firing a devastating
volley mowing down in an instant most of the first rank. A single
squadron managed to break through but the third rank of infantry
knocked it down (ie turned round)”.

My
flags here are the AWI ones which are probably the wrong style of
flags because at the time of the battle (1758) the regiment was a
one battalion regiment with different plainer flags.

Note
also that during the SYW this regiment had silver buttons and white
lapel lace. By the AWI, the regiment had yellow buttons and lapel
lace. I do not know when the change was made but I have gone for the
SYW colour scheme.

I
have feilded these as cuirassiers in their post-1760 uniform.
Although they were converted to cuirassiers the actual cuirasse does
not appear to have been issued until after the end of the SYW. But I
wanted to use the latest offerings from Black Hussar and so these are
actual cuirassiers. If you want Prussian (or lesser smaller states')
Cuirassiers then these are the best you can buy in 28mm. Each figure
comes with a variety of sword arms you can chose from.

Regular
readers of this blog will know that I am slightly obsessed with 18th
century Hessians. This blog focused on Hessians in the early SYW but
these new posts will concentrate on the late war. What I like about
them is that they are a Prussian looking army but much smaller and
feasible given that I have to paint both sides if I embark on a
project. Add to that the fact that my second favourite army of this
bewigged century is the French. Who could possible manufacture both
sides? Well I am teasing you because my favourite manufacturer is
Black Hussar who, incidentally, produce both Prussians and French for
the SYW. The imminent arrival of Prussian Cuirassiers is most welcome
too.

So
here is the start of a small project (Hessians v French) for late
SYW. When I say small, I mean similar sized to the WAS in Italy
project which consists of about 12 battalions and 12 squadrons each
side.

The
other thing I like about Hessians are their bewilderingly colourful
AWI flags. In 1760 the old Landgraf passed away and his son
Friedrich
II came to the throne. He was a Prussian General
and inhaber of a Prussian Infantry regiment too. Already quite
Prussian in it's look, he tinkered with the organisation and flags to
make the army a mini-replica of his big neighbour to the East. The
early flags, prior to 1760, I find a little bit dull. The post 1760
flags are much more Prussian in look but many details of what they
looked like are unknown. With the AWI you would have thought that the
fog of what the flags looked like might have lifted but sadly not.
Many of the articles on the AWI flags captured are inconsistent with
Prussian practice. A good article is here at

http://dupagemilitaryflag.com/Hessian_Flags.html

So
what I am doing is a late SYW Hessian army with AWI flags. Some are
conjectural as the Hessians only sent single battalions to North
America whereas I will field double battalion regiments. Some
questions remain as to what exactly was the colour combination of the
Leibfahne and what was the colour combination of the Regimentfahne? I
will try to follow the logic of the Prussian system but I admit there
are many opposing views so this is just my interpretation. But you
also have to just love the vibrant colour of the flags which came
from http://FlagsofWar.com

Iain
there is a great chap and he has resized the flags slightly for me so
that they fit on the Black Hussar flagpoles. I think the artwork is
even better than GMB's, which is saying something.

In
terms of the uniforms, most will be based on the SYW late version but
with this first regiment, I have gone with the AWI uniform. The late
SYW version had pink facings which looked wrong with these flags
whereas the sand/mustard yellow facings compliment the flags. And in
the unlikely event that I ever do armies for the AWI, then these two
battalions can be combined into one, less one set of flags.

I have decided to sell off this collection. I just don't have the time to dedicate to it any more and my other blog takes up any free-time I have.

I will sell these figures on eBay if I don't get any interest here but meanwhile I have painted all these units you can see here:

5 battalions of 28 figures each.
5 companies of their grenadiers (each 4 figures)
4 extra 'dead/wounded' figures based individually.
One mounted c-in-c base.
One mounted officer
8 Horse in two squadrons.

I can add (but they are currently unpainted) two further battalions and 2 companies.
Some artillery.

Obviously I'd prefer that they all went to one home but I'm relaxed about sending them in different directions.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested at nigbil at free.fr
I'm looking at about GBP5 a figure.
Cheers

Nigel

PS. I'll probably leave the blog in place without any further postings.Painted Soldierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16935114747216560429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6893807742213123992.post-4029723802351636602015-04-04T20:03:00.000-07:002015-04-04T20:03:29.586-07:00Major-General Burkhard Wilhelm von Fürstenberg

Here is the first of the Brigade commanders - a Front Rank figure. He is pictured
leading his brigade of three battalions IR1, IR2 and his own regiment, IR3.

This is what I have said about him previously: "This is the first time we come across a general for my Hessian Generalkommando and, strangely enough, he was not even Hessian. Major-General Burkhard Wilhelm von Fuerstenberg was given this regiment in 1753 and he had been in Palatinate service previously (his probable nationality). In 1751 he was offered sevice in the Hessian army and promotion. His stay though did not last long and in 1758 he re-entered Palatinate service. I imagine that he knew he was going to be put in a somewhat embarrassing position as the Palatine Army was in service with the French and therefore on the other side. On his return home he was given a regiment and you can find details on the Kronoskaf website. He died in 1766."Painted Soldierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16935114747216560429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6893807742213123992.post-73840019195943275352015-03-23T19:13:00.000-07:002015-03-23T19:13:06.933-07:00Generalkommando

The Erbprinz wears the colonel’s uniform of his own Infantry Regiment (IR7) and
Prince Christian wears the colonel’s uniform of the 4th Horse

The unit was raised in 1688 as “Prinz Friedrich” regiment of foot. It took part in the campaign against the Turks in Greece. In 1698, the unit became known as the “Prinz Friedrich Bataillon”. In 1702, the unit was renamed “Prinz Friedrichs Regiment zu Fuß“ (aka Erbprinz). When the Erbprinz (Hereditary Prince) Friedrich became King of Sweden in 1721, the regiment assumed the name König (King’s) regiment.

The regiment was part of the Imperial District contingent during the Wars of the Spanish and Austrian Successions. In 1746, the regiment was sent to Scotland. In 1751, the regiment was renamed “Leibregiment Infanterie”. From 1760, it bore the name of its Kommandeure.

During the Seven Years' War, the successive Chefs of the regiment were:
-since 1751: Landgrave Wilhelm VIII.
-from 1760 to 1785: Landgrave Friedrich II.

During the Seven Years' War, the successive Kommandeure assuming effective command of the regiment was, from 1749 until 1776, Major-General von Wutginau who, in my OOB, commands this brigade as well.

During the American War of Independence, as “Regiment Landgraf”, the regiment was sent to North America and fought at Fort Washington, Newport and Spingfield. In 1789, the regiment was amalgamated with Infanterie Regiment Nr. 7.

Here is the first of four Hessian Horse regiments, each consisting of two squadrons or about 300 men in total. There were also two dragoon regiments of 4 squadrons each.

This regiment was raised in 1672 and had a distinguished service record. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment took part in the battles of Blenheim (August 13, 1704), Castiglione (September 8, 1706), Oudenarde (July 11, 1708) and Malplaquet (September 11, 1709).

Each squadron carried a standard and I show both examples. Figures are a mix. The horses are all from Front Rank as are the officer, standard bearer and musician. The rank and file are from Crusader. The illustration is from Saudelli and Pagan.Painted Soldierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16935114747216560429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6893807742213123992.post-6914315436431562052015-02-17T20:33:00.002-08:002015-02-17T20:33:27.405-08:00Revamped IR4 Prinz Johann Casimir von Ysenburg

So I have caught up and increased the size of all the units I had painted. They are now all 28 figures strong with an extra company of 4 grenadiers. I have now switched to these lovely Black Hussar figures and will be using these from now on. The grenadiers will still come from Foundry for the time being.

I have also used Army painter as you can see. Soon IR5 and then some cavalry.Painted Soldierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16935114747216560429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6893807742213123992.post-31867120987729910782015-02-14T19:06:00.001-08:002015-02-14T19:06:28.260-08:00Revamped IR 3 Fürstenberg

Continuing the process of increasing the size of these battalions, I've now augmented IR3 above. At the same time I have added ArmyPainter to give them a more weathered look. I'm also conscious of the fact that the terrain is non-existant! So I'm about to make some terrain and I'm just awaiting the arrival of various products before I can start making a landscape. I have changed my mind about the size of these Hessian
battalions and have increased them in size from 18 to 28 figures. This has
partly been dictated by whom they will be fighting – the French. They tended to
field small battalions of 500 men whereas the Hessians fielded 700 to 800. So I
have decided that 20 figure French battalions look best and, with this figure
ratio, that meant increasing the Hessians correspondingly.

So the battalions have increased in size and I have had to
add an extra grenadier figure too. Now 7 bases of 4 for the Musketeers and one
base for grenadiers, which will be converged with those of six regiments. I’ll
be revamping all the figures previously

The top four pictures are of IR 4 Prinnz Ysenburg and the bottom two show the converged battalion of Grenadiers.

All of the IR 4 figures are from Black Hussar Miniatures, with the exception of the one dead guy who is from Foundry. What can one say about BHM? They are such beautiful figures, so crisp that you need do nothing except paint them. The rankers come from their new marching poses and the command, which I had purchased previously, are from their standing range - all Prussians of course.

This was the regiment of Prinz Johann Casimir von Ysenburg, who was killed at the battle of Bergen in 1759, and he was also the younger brother of Lieutenant-General Prince Christian Ludwig of Ysenburg-Birstein.

I have now finished four of the Hessian regiments out of twelve. There will be two converged Grenadier battalions and the first of those will have grenadiers from IR 1 through to IR6.
The last two pictures show the grenadiers of the first four regiments done so far. They are all Foundry and I especially like the Prinz Ysenburg command - the office has been shot in the foot or has stubbed his toe on a rock, and he is leaning on an NCO for support.Painted Soldierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16935114747216560429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6893807742213123992.post-60628121635620358562013-11-02T02:00:00.003-07:002013-11-02T02:00:49.910-07:00IR 3 Fürstenberg

Here is IR 3 Fürstenberg. Figures are again Foundry rank and file from their SYW Prussian range and Black Hussar Miniatures command (except for the officer who is from Foundry too).

This is the first time we come across a general for my Hessian Generalkommando and, strangely enough, he was not even Hessian. He died in 1766.

There was no uniform for generals in this period and they would just have worn the uniform of the regiment they were colonel of, with possibly, the addition of feathered tricornes. As Fuerstenberg will command this first infantry brigade of three battalions I will have to find a suitable mounted officer figure for him.

I'm having to give some thought to whom this Hessian army will eventually fight and this is my initial idea:

A mini-Hessian war in the 1750s – a war between Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt over some territory or family squabble. H-D's army is tiny (and blue-coated) so it will need help from either a) the Palatinate (blue-coated) or b) Hanover (red-coated) or c) Saxony (white-coated) or d) France (light-grey coated). The objective being to be both historically feasible and colourful – in other words the blue-coated Hessians of HK need an opponent in a coat of another colour! Depending on when I pitch this mini-war our lead friend Fürstenberg is going to have a similar dilemma.Painted Soldierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16935114747216560429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6893807742213123992.post-49141879195563037512013-09-29T01:09:00.000-07:002013-09-29T01:09:23.443-07:00IR2 Haudring

These are beautiful figures – crisp, delicious little sculpts full of character and absolutely flawless! They are Prussians being used as Hessians. Their range is developing all the time but I bought a few samples to see whether they were compatible with Foundry, which, as you can see, they are.

I have seen a comment on TMP to the effect that their bayonets are a bit fragile but I can’t comment on this as I didn’t buy any rankers with muskets. The standard bearers come with their standards separate (hands are attached to the pole). Obviously they come out of new moulds which accounts for their crispness but I’m confident these guys will not let the quality slip over time. As for price, they come in at 1.50 euros each so in tune with other manufacturers.

I’ve had a St.Paul on the road to Damascus mini-moment – which is a very grandiloquent statement but perhaps you can forgive me. As you know I do all my 18th century stuff with the intention of using Carnage & Glory II computer rules. These provide two ground-scales 1mm = 1 pace and 1mm = 2 paces. Nigel, of C & G II fame, has kindly let me put the two charts on my blog and so they are attached. I normally use the 1mm = 1 pace version (see the green chart) which requires large battalions and probably looks best – certainly my 40mm are based to this system and I had planned, almost automatically, to use this again with the25mm infantry units consisting of 28 figures and 6 figure squadrons. My catharsis was the realisation that I was, as usual, biting off more than I could chew.

Twenty eight figure battalions would take me for ever to paint as I have to slot this project in with what else is going on – not to mention the cost! So I have halved the battalions (roughly speaking) and gone for the ground-scale of 1mm = 2 paces (see the blue chart). This will produce 18 figure battalions and 4 figure squadrons, so much more manageable.

I've decided to paint the infantry as they are listed numerically on Kronoskaf. The numbering system did not exist at this time but it makes perfect sense when trying to track these Hessian regiments through their changes of colonels. If you have ever read Pengel & Hurt's volumes on the subject you will certainly be perplexed as the details jump all over the place and pinning them down to a particular regiment at any particular time is work worthy of a genius with a photographic memory, which rules me out straight away. So, trust me, go with the Kronoskaf guide.

So I've started with regiment one, Leibgarde zu Fuß . The grenadiers are separate (3 figures) and have been painted but I won't show them until I have combined them with the grenadiers of another regiment. A converged grenadier battalion (there will be two in total) will be made up of the grenadiers from six regiments. I've used Foundry Prussians (designed years ago by Copplestone) as these are probably my favourite figures of all time. But for some of the other battalions I'll probably mix with other manufacturers (Perry, Crusader and Black Hussar, a new company). In terms of uniform detail, there are a few small issues when using these Foundry Prussians as Hessians. Firstly they have a sword-knot but there is no evidence that the Hessians had them. In this instance I have painted the sword-knot the same colour combination as the pompom which makes sense but for which, as I have said, there is no evidence. Secondly, the Prussian figures have turn-back tabs on the back of the coat and there is, again, no evidence that the Hessians had these. Never mind, the figures are pretty close in all other respects.

Before I go onto organisation, I wanted to discuss dates. The SYW started in 1756 and our Landrave died in 1760. So these troops will represent the Hessen-Kassel army between 1756 and 1760. Even within this small four year period, regiments changed their names as Colonels retired or were killed in battle. This four year period was the most intense period for battles. Of course there were battles in the second period of the SYW (1760-1763) but all sides were becoming increasingly exhausted so most of the major battles happened in the first half (Hastenbeck, Krefeld, Bergen, Minden to name just a few). But the changes of colonels leads us to a problem and so I have arbitrarily chosen 1756 as the date for this army and officers will be shown as of this date with their rank as of this date. This will produce a slight problem with the artillery but I'll leave that discussion for another day.

ORGANISATION:

Excluding militia, there were twelve regiments of foot, each of one battlion, in 1756. Eight of them had been shipped to England one year earlier (to protect it from an expected French invasion – remember the British and French had been at war 'unofficially' in the Americas since 1754) but had returned by the start of the SYW.

According to the 1754 Hesse-Cassel Reglement for the infantry, each regiment formed a single battalion with 10 companies including a grenadier corps of 8 men within each company. A grenadier company was to be formed when on campaign. Total force was 809 men including regimental staff with 26 non-combatants in 1757. The strength was augmented during the course of the SYW amounting to about 950 men 'book strength' by 1759. Using Nigel Marsh's basing system my battalions consist of 3 bases (each 1.75” wide so 271 men) or about 810 men plus officers. These are very strong regiments as they might have appeared on 'Day One', the 29th August 1756 when Frederick invaded Saxony.

Each battalion carried two colours and was organised in 4 divisions and 8 platoons for combat, excluding the grenadiers. For battle, the battalion formed in 3 ranks, different to the 1757 Hanoverian infantry, which still formed in 4 ranks up to the battle of Hastenbeck. The grenadiers were usually combined to form ad hoc grenadier battalions, however, a regular establishment of grenadier battalions with the Allied Army was introduced only in June 1759 on Ferdinand of Brunswick's order. Beforehand, the size and number of battalions depended on circumstance. Up to the campaign of 1760 it was usually two battalions formed of 5 to 6 companies each. For the changes made in 1760 please see my other blog, looking under the label 'SYW Pragmatic' going back to the post of 28th June 2010.

Lastly, I'm showing a map of Hessen-Kassel in 1762 which was the same as it was in 1756. The inset map of the Schaumburg Enclave shows that Hessen-Kassel had feudal rights there ( recruitment etc) but in practice it was ruled by Wilhelm, Count of Schaumburg-Lippe-Bückeburg .
